How We Work

Our Beliefs

We believe in the power of landscape to transcend time and address vital issues that impact people’s lives and the environment. We embrace a conceptually driven process that engages clients, user groups, and stakeholders in the creation of unique and engaging landscapes — while meeting the client’s aesthetic and functional requirements.

Our approach

Our approach to our work is marked by a deep appreciation for local knowledge and consideration of the people who will be using the places we design. We cultivate collaborative relationships with our clients, exploring ideas through a design process that’s both iterative and participatory.

Our Process

Our knowledge of construction and how projects get built is an integral part of our process. We team with other designers, engineers, environmental professionals, craftsmen, and artists. Together, we meet project goals and ensure that each element is properly designed, engineered, and built.

Listen

As we work, we ask: does this meet our project goals? How does this operate functionally? What are the environmental and aesthetic implications of various options? How will people use and maintain the space? Is the design fulfilling the desires and aspirations of the people we’re designing for? Are we honoring the site and making a positive impact?

Analyze

Our work is informed by the site itself and by the people we are designing for—our clients, the community, and those who will ultimately work, play, or live there.

Plan

We seek out diverse viewpoints and engage in research to better understand constraints and to help us discover the best responses to project issues.

Develop

Using diagrams, visioning sketches, and other graphic models, we develop and present concepts to our clients. Together, we test ideas, and evaluate alternatives.

Document

We think about how all the parts of a project come together cohesively and create a legible whole. We provide highly detailed documentation illustrating all landscape elements, including gateways, signage, outdoor spaces and the subtleties of landforms.

Implement

We think about materials, cost, sustainability, and constructability from the very beginning of a project until the last tree is planted and the final stone is laid. We visit the site and work with contractors to ensure the best results for our clients and the end users.
