Re-imagining a Historic Public Plaza
Andover, MA
Overview
Traverse Landscape Architects managed the design process and assisted the Town of Andover in re-designing its historic town hall (now the Andover Post Office). Historically, the plaza was used as a gathering spot for seasonal events. Unfortunately over time, it had become a chaotic mix of site furnishings, mailboxes, and signs.
The goal of the new plaza design was to create a large, central space. Granite planters along the perimeter provide ample seating and are lushly planted for endless splashes of color and to shade the plaza from the sun. The historic granite hitching posts, previously lost among the clutter, were integrated into granite walls, framing the plaza. Granite pavers, original to the site, were cleaned and re-set. The project was completed in the Spring of 2015, and has become a popular community gathering area and backdrop for weddings and events.
