PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND

Overview

In Providence, the streets tell layered stories—of a colonial port city turned industrial powerhouse, and later, a creative capital shaped by its rivers, colleges, and tightly woven neighborhoods. Brick, water, and movement define its rhythm.

For Traverse, this project begins close to home. Working within the city we inhabit daily, the effort becomes less about intervention and more about conversation—listening to what exists, and responding with care.

Rooted in early site analysis, the project explores how small, strategic changes can recalibrate downtown streetscapes—enhancing walkability, clarifying spatial identity, and inviting a more livable urban experience.

SITE ANALYSIS & STRATEGIES

Rather than approaching downtown as a singular condition, five streets were selected as distinct yet familiar archetypes. These streets become lenses through which broader strategies are tested.

VISUALIZATION APPROACH

To translate strategy into experience, a series of perspective renderings was developed, pairing existing conditions with proposed futures.

These images do more than illustrate change—they construct atmosphere. What was once abstract becomes tangible, allowing viewers to step into a possible future and feel the difference.

Scroll horizontally through the images below to explore five street segments used as test cases during the analysis phase. Each set demonstrates how design strategies are applied, alongside existing and proposed conditions that reveal the evolution of each street. Night-time views are included to illustrate how the spaces are experienced after dark, adding another layer to the comparison.
