Engaging Play
EASTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Overview
In 2023, Traverse Landscape Architects were commissioned to reimagine the playgrounds at Richardson Olmsted School in Easton, MA. Once dominated by asphalt, these areas have been transformed into dynamic, engaging spaces inspired by Easton's natural environment, particularly the adjacent Clifford G. Grant Conservation Area.
The redesigned playgrounds incorporate looping walkways that mimic natural trails and climbing structures modeled after native tree stands. These features encourage students to deepen their connection to their community while engaging in activities that promote both physical and mental well-being.
Prioritizing ecological restoration, the new playgrounds replace asphalt with vegetation and lush lawns. The space also includes outdoor classrooms for school use and active play features, seamlessly integrating recreation with education and placing ecological learning at the heart of the design.
