Mount Greylock Substantially Complete
February 26, 2019
Traverse provided design services including the early Feasibility Study phase through construction documents and construction administration. This multi-phased project is still in the late stages of construction. However, many of the design elements for the school entrance, outdoor learning and gathering spaces are complete.
The front entrance is an extension of the physical school, tied together through similar materials used inside and out. As protection from the harsh Berkshire winters, the building has a large wood and stone clad canopy that transitions into native stone site walls. Once inside, the lobby walls are covered with milled planks of Honey Locust trees taken down during the first phase of construction.
The student dining extends outside to a large flexible terrace which is anchored by five high top tables made of stone, steel and White Oak planks with live edges.
A prominent design feature includes a secluded outdoor learning area that can also be used as a gathering space before and after athletic events. The space was designed using locally quarried boulders and flagstone showcasing the complex local geology.
