Fairhaven Public Schools pursued renovations of their natural grass stadium to synthetic turf for many years. Traverse Landscape Architects was consulted to deliver on their dream of a home field advantage that was both safe and high performing. Fairhaven High School is located on the Acushnet River near Buzzards Bay Massachusetts. The original high school building which is still in use is on the National Registry of Historic Places so healing a modern stadium into the existing facility was critical for the town and school. The stadium had not hosted a home game for any sport in a number of years due to unsafe field conditions. This was due to poor soil conditions, localized flooding and changing weather patterns/sea level rise.
Traverse helped the school district navigate regulatory policy and political strife to deliver improvements to Alumni Stadium that are not only safe and higher performing but respectful and true to the historic heritage of the site. The fields drainage system and synthetic turf are state of the art with built in redundancies that keep seasonal flooding and sea level rise at bay for a number of years.
