Early in the design process a great deal of options were considered for placement and size of the new middle school that met the educational program and fit within the site constraints. Ultimately, the feasibility study led to a schematic design that met all the requirements in the best possible way. Below is an example of the extensive level of options considered.
After careful study, a building footprint emerged that could allow for open space and parking shared between the two schools and open space, parking and circulation in the rear of the new school. More importantly, several sustainable design solutions were incorporated. The project is still under construction as of 2021 and 2022 so stay tuned for more results!
-Wetlands that were historically isolated due to early development, were hydrologically reconnected and expanded in the new design.
-A new constructed wetland at the front of the school is a focal point for students and the community.
-Stormwater is harvested in a crate system below the synthetic turf field, filtered and re-used to irrigate the landscape around the new school.
-Solar panels were installed in the parking areas.
-A roof garden was added on the 4th floor as an extension of the aquaponics and greenhouse lab.
-Both formal and informal outdoor learning areas were designed for both schools.
-Neighborhood connections were restored with safe passage, wayfinding, litter receptacles and educational signage.
-Bike racks were located in key perimeter areas to allow students to park bikes and walk with their peers into school.
-Plant palette consisted of native and naturalized cultivars including meadow grass areas reducing mowing, fertilization and watering.
The culmination of thoughtful planning, leadership, design innovation and workmanship resulted in an exceptional campus design which showcases the many sustainable practices we believe in and which enhance our guiding principals of growth, renewal and community.
