Gender & Sexuality Center at URI

The Gender & Sexuality Center at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is the first of its kind in the United States in higher education. The 4,000-square-foot Ruggles House, which formerly occupied the site, was demolished. Its salvaged foundation stones were used in the landscape to delineate spaces as well as reference the former building while welcoming visitors to the new facility. The landscape design is intended to integrate the building into the existing residential scale along Upper College Road while capturing and infiltrating stormwater on-site and providing a front lawn for overflow space during larger events.
