One of the most important aspects to the project was siting the building to protect the nearby Memorial Oak Grove. Twenty-three Red Oak Trees were planted by the Alumni Association in 1919 in memory of twenty-two students and one faculty member who were lost while serving in World War I. The trees were inventoried and inspected and ultimately a majority were preserved and protected throughout construction.
This Oak grove continues to provide a significant landscape and cultural artifact for the community. Additionally, the new landscape showcases a native plant palette.
